After a 6-4-2 regular season and a fourth-place finish last year, the Tigers fell in the AUS championship quarter-final to the Cape Breton Capers. This year, they look to improve and return to the national stage 30 years after their gold medal win in 1995.
The Tigers started last season with a 1-1 draw against the Universite de Moncton Aigle Bleus at Wickwire Field. A mid-season slump put their playoff hopes in jeopardy, but the team came together in a dominant 4-0 victory over the UPEI Panthers to clinch a spot in playoffs. Mohammed Wahdan secured two goals that game along with Kyle Routledge and Mykeo Parker-Christmas. Goalkeeper, Emmett Workman started his first game of the season against UPEI and earned himself an assist to one of Mohammed Wahdan's goals.
Standout performances led to several awards for the Tigers. Jack Ellis, and Sinclair Astridge, earned spots on the AUS First Team All-Star squad for their outstanding contributions on the pitch. Mohammed Tolba was named the AUS Rookie of the Year, making an immediate impact in his debut season.
Mohammed Wahdan was the Tigers top scorer, with Luke Berryman and Mohammed Tolba tied for the most assists, each contributing four throughout the season.
The Tigers will look very similar heading into this season with Luke Berryman, Wilfreid Kindo, and Connor Johnston graduating.
“We have a great core here where I feel we are growing as a group and putting in the work,” says head coach Jazic. “The work the players put in this off-season, the ‘togetherness’ of this group is very promising. They are working hard, showing commitment and accountability to one another and really pushing each other to be better every day. It’s a great culture here and that’s a credit to the players. We are all hungry and motivated to grow and bring a championship to Dalhousie.”
That core had a busy off season this year. Six players spent their summer training with the Halifax Wanderers first team and U21 team and featured in the International Summer Series against Wrexham A.F.C. Playing in the three-game series was Wahdan, Tolba, Astridge, Ben Thompson, and Ben Hashimoto as well as incoming Tiger Eliia Al-Shamlat. In addition, Thompson, Isaac Geyer, Andrew Chen and Farrell Johnson were members of the Halifax County Premier team that won the provincial title earlier this month.
After four exhibition games this pre-season, the Tigers kick off their AUS campaign on August 29 when they host Memorial Sea-Hawks at Wickwire field at 7:30pm.
