Purboo tops Redbirds, Yen leads Martlets at RSEQ golf opener at Le Portage

New faces emerged as the RSEQ golf season teed off at Le Portage, with McGill's Purboo leading the Redbirds' men's squad and rookie Yen pacing the Martlets.

L'ASSOMPTION, Que. – The McGill University golf teams opened their RSEQ season with middle-of-the-pack finishes at the first conference tournament of the year, held Aug. 26-27 at Club de golf Le Portage.

On the men's side, McGill placed sixth of nine teams overall with a team total of 958 strokes (94 over par) over three rounds, trailing Montreal (891), Laval (893), Bishop's (915), Concordia (955) and ETS (957). The Redbirds were led by Camden Purboo, who tied for 11th individually after rounds of 72, 75 and 82. Teammates Adley Abols (19th), Benjamin Blanshay (30th), Rayan Benqlilou (44th), James Foltin (48th) and Watson Steinwald (54th) rounded out McGill's scoring.

Montréal's William Cartier-Watchorn and Laval's William Forgues shared the men's individual title, each finishing even par at 216.

In the women's division, McGill finished third of six teams with a cumulative score of 762 (114 over par) to stand behind champion Laval (714) and Bishop's (736) on the podium. McGill's top performer was rookie Astoria Yen, who placed third individually with rounds of 82, 76 and 75. She was followed by teammates Madeline Lobo (t-7th), Fiona Marc-Boyle (17th) and Luisa Zieglerova (21st).

The women's individual crown went to Laval's Sarah-Maude Martel, who carded 74-79-77 for a 14-over par-230 total, edging teammate Frédéricke Desbiens by a single stroke.

The RSEQ university circuit resumes Sept. 8-9 at Club de golf La Bête in Mont-Tremblant, Que.
