EDMONTON – With training camp approaching quickly, the MacEwan women's hockey team has bolstered its forward corps with the addition of one more promising recruit.
Amy Fraser, who played for the Sherwood Park Reign in the U18AAA ranks last season, has joined the Griffins for the 2025-26 Canada West season.
"At this point of the year, we were looking for a specific type of person who's going to come in and be committed to doing the right things the right way – not only strive to become better herself but also push our current players to be better, too," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming.
"She's a local kid who is enrolled at MacEwan University, coming here for a Bachelor of Science, so it was a good fit."
Fraser had three points in 26 games for the Reign last season, adding a goal in two playoff contests. The Tofield, Alta. native also previously recorded 22 points in 41 games for the Sherwood Park Fury U18AA team from 2022-24.
"I think she plays a pretty well-rounded game," said Leeming. "We've had a chance to get some more eyes on her over the summer. She's strong, so she's difficult to play against in that sense, and loves the physical play – doesn't shy away from board battles or competing for pucks – which is part of the identity we've been building towards.
"We are expecting it to be a seamless transition for her. When she gets opportunities to take pucks to the net and get shots, she's capable of doing that. There are a lot of little things her game entails that we're going to like."
After a humbling reality check on the road, the top-ranked Thunderbirds return to Vancouver seeking to defend a 21-game home winning streak against a surging Calgary squad and debut a high-profile Russian recruit.
