Acadia Athletics is proud to announce Matt Holton as head coach of the men’s soccer program.
Holton, who has served as an assistant coach with the Axemen since 2023 under former head coach Amit Batra, steps into the role following Batra’s transition to Sporting Director with Halifax Tides FC of the Northern Super League.
A familiar face within the Acadia and Nova Scotia soccer communities, Holton’s journey with the Axemen began in 2007 when he arrived from England on a one-year exchange from Loughborough University. He never left.
Holton suited up for the Axemen from 2007 to 2010 and was team captain for two seasons. He graduated from Acadia in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in English.
“Acadia has played a huge part in my life, so being named the head coach of the men’s soccer program is a great honour for me,” said Holton. “I first came to Acadia as a player in 2007, so to see the growth of the program and return as a coach is very special. I’m excited and look forward to building upon the incredible work that was done by both Amit Batra and Findlay MacRae in their time with the Axemen.”
“Over the last two seasons, Matt has demonstrated his commitment to creating a positive environment for the student-athletes to grow and develop and I am excited to watch the program continue to move forward under his leadership and guidance,” said Acadia Athletic Director Brian Finniss.
Holton brings with him an extensive coaching resume and player development background. Since 2018, he has served as Soccer Nova Scotia’s director of development, overseeing the male Excel program and working with clubs across the province to support players aged U13 and older. His role has included planning and integrating performance strategies such as nutrition, strength and conditioning, and mental skills into a high-performance environment.
He was also the men’s head coach at the 2021 Canada Summer Games and previously held the role of grassroots development officer with Soccer Nova Scotia from 2017 to 2018.
Prior to his work at the provincial level, Holton coached the Mount Saint Vincent University women’s soccer team from 2013 to 2016 and was technical director for Halifax City Soccer Club from 2014 to 2017.
