SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskie Men's Hockey team and head coach Brandin Cote announced today the signing of former AHL, ECHL, and Saskatoon Blades goaltender Nolan Maier.

"Nolan is a proven winner, a true pro, and an outstanding teammate," said Cote. "His competitiveness and character make everyone around him better. We're thrilled to welcome him to the Huskies and excited for the impact he'll have on our group."

"I'm excited to get going with this group of guys, there's a lot of really good players on our team and a lot of former teammates and friends, so I think that's what made it such an easy decision {to join the Huskies]," said Maier. "[Saskatoon] has been a second home, and I've always been in contact with the Huskies, so when the opportunity came up it was really a no-brainer that this is where I wanted to be."

A 5-foot-11 goaltender, Maier joins the Huskies following a four-year pro career in the ECHL and AHL, most recently with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads. In the fall of 2025, the netminder appeared in seven games for the Steelheads, recording a 4-3-0 record, 3.89 goals against average and .877 save percentage.

Maier spent his first two professional seasons (2022-23 & 2023-24) under AHL contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, affiliate of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, and recorded a 6-2-2 record. While with the Phantoms, he also appeared between the pipes for their ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, in 64 games between 2022 and 2024. In 2024-25 Maier then signed an AHL contract with the Providence Bruins, AHL affiliate to the Boston Bruins, and returned to the ECHL for 22 games with the Maine Mariners.

Collectively, he appeared in 11 AHL games, recording a 2.88 goals against average, .886 save percentage, and a 6-3-2 record. In 93 ECHL games, Maier earned a 3.05 goals against average .897 save percentage, and 41-40-8 record.
The Yorkton product is no stranger to Saskatoon, as prior to turning pro he suited up in 216 games for the WHL's Blades from 2017 to 2022 where he recorded the second-most all-time WHL wins by a goalie with 122. In addition to a 2.89 career goals against average and .905 career save percentage, he also appeared in 15 playoff contests, recording a 7-7-1 record.

With an 11-4-1 record at the midway point of the 2025-26 Canada West season, the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Huskies resume their Canada West title defence this Friday in Winnipeg with a weekend series against the Manitoba Bisons (6-9-1). Tune in live, at CanadaWest.tv or listen at HuskieFAN.ca.
