Algoma University is excited to announce the commitment of Jonah Santa Maria to the Thunderbirds Varsity Curling Team.
A proud Sault Ste. Marie native and graduate of Korah Collegiate & Vocational School, Jonah joins the Thunderbirds after competing with both the Western Mustangs and the Korah Colts.
Jonah has built an impressive resume over just four years in the sport, competing at major events such as the 2025 OUA Championships, 2025 Brock Invitational, 2024 NOSSA Championships, and the 2024 City Championships. Playing primarily as Vice, Jonah is known for his strong competitive drive and team-first approach.
"I hope to bring a strong competitive nature and team-first mentality to the Thunderbirds curling team. As a student-athlete, I pride myself on being coachable, resilient, and committed to excelling both in sport and academics," Jonah shared.
Off the ice, Jonah is also a dedicated competitive compound archer and golfer. He will be pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at Algoma University.
When asked why he chose Algoma, Jonah said:
"I chose Algoma U because it provides a strong business program and a coaching staff that I trust to support my growth as an athlete. Staying close to home is also a benefit athletically and academically."
The Thunderbirds are thrilled to welcome Jonah home and look forward to his contributions on and off the ice.
A new hand will guide the Toronto curling program as Sean Slapnicar, a coach known for building winning teams, takes the reins with sights set on an OUA championship.
