(SAULT STE. MARIE, On): The Algoma Thunderbirds men's soccer team opened their 2025 OUA campaign with a hard-fought weekend series at Superior Heights against the Brock Badgers. While the Thunderbirds dropped both matches by a narrow 1-0 scoreline, the weekend showcased resilience, strong defensive play, and promising performances from Algoma's roster.

Game One (August 30):
In Saturday's opener, the Thunderbirds battled Brock to a scoreless first half, keeping the Badgers off the board through disciplined defending and timely saves from goalkeeper Anthony Berganza, who finished the match with two stops. Defenders Nicolas Palmeiro and Brett Findlay provided offensive sparks, each registering shots on target.

Brock managed the game's lone breakthrough in the 75th minute, but Algoma continued to push until the final whistle. The Thunderbirds also held even with the Badgers in shots (2-3), corners (2-2), and saves (2-2), showing their ability to match up well against their OUA rivals.

Final Score: Algoma 0 - Brock 1

AUSU Player fo the Game: Anthony Berganza

Game Two (August 31):
The Sunday rematch followed a similar script. The Thunderbirds' backline once again stood tall, anchored by Berganza, who was outstanding with six saves in the match. Brock found the net in the 42nd minute on a penalty kick, but Algoma responded with energy in the second half, creating several quality chances.

Substitute Theo Hampton and striker Calen Doobay both tested Brock's keeper with dangerous shots, while midfielder Evan Hurren added another attempt as Algoma pressed for an equalizer. Despite their late push, the Thunderbirds came up just short, but the team's persistence and ability to generate offense against a tough opponent highlighted their growth.

Final Score: Algoma 0 - Brock 1
