Oshawa, ON – Nipissing Lakers Women's Hockey rallied late in the third period and grabbed a point on the road on Wednesday, January 7th, losing 3-2 in overtime to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
The Ridgebacks got on the board first at the 9:10 mark of the opening frame. Kiana Danielson scored her first of the season.
Ontario Tech's Jordanna Connors was then called for hooking at 15:16, giving the Lakers their first power play of the night. Melissa Svienson scored her third goal of the season at 17:06 to tie the game at 1. Tessa Kosec collected the lone assist on the Nipissing goal. The first period would end tied at 1. Shots were 9-5 Nipissing.
The second period began quickly for Ontario Tech, as Zoe Wilson buried her first of the season at 1:40 to give the Ridgebacks a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers were awarded another power play chance at 8:27 as Ella Dickson of Ontario Tech took a cross-checking penalty. Nipissing was unable to convert on this power play chance.
Nipissing's Megan Hayhurst was called for a delay of game penalty at 11:18, but Nipissing's penalty kill ensured the Ridgebacks didn't take a two goal lead. The score remained 2-1 Ontario Tech after 40 minutes. Shots were 9-8 Nipissing in the period.
The third period began with some back and forth play and a few chances on net for either side. Nipissing's Tahlia Fisher was called for tripping at 11:42. The Ridgebacks couldn't convert on the power play. Fisher took another minor penalty, this time for body checking, at 14:46, giving Ontario Tech another chance to increase their lead. Nipissing's penalty kill proved to be impressive again, once again killing the power play. The Lakers pressed in the dying minutes of regulation before Tessa Kosec's point shot found the twine at 18:42, tying the game at 2. The goal was Kosec's 4th of the season.
60 minutes proved ineffective in producing a winner in this contest.
The Ridgebacks attacked quickly in overtime, but Lakers netminder Allie Lehmann made two key saves to keep Nipissing alive. At the 2:03 mark, Milana Perri of Ontario Tech found the back of the net, giving the Ridgebacks a 3-2 win.
Tessa Kosec scored a goal and added an assist in her 100th career regular season game in the OUA.
Allie Lehmann stopped 24 of 27 shots in the loss.
Nipissing's penalty kill was perfect in the game, stopping all 3 Ontario Tech chances.
