‘Birds remain perfect on young season with clean sheet win over WolfPack

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The defending national champion UBC Thunderbirds remain perfect on the season after a 2-0 victory over the host Thompson Rivers WolfPack Friday night at Hillside Stadium.

Ava Alexander and Sienna Gibson scored just six minutes apart as the T-Birds (3-0) staked out their multi-goal lead by the 20^th minute while holding off the WolfPack (2-1) the rest of the way, spoiling TRU's home opener by handing the hosts their first loss of the young season.

"We came in with such good energy tonight and scored a couple really good goals," said UBC head coach, Jesse Symons, whose side has yet to concede a goal in 2025. "As a team, we had to manage a lot of elements today with the wind in the first half and then set pieces in the second half, but we did a great job."



It was yet another dominant performance all-around by the T-Birds who opened scoring in the 14^th minute with Alexander's second of the season. Jayda Thompson played a through ball to the fifth-year Alexander who managed to evade a WolfPack defender with some nifty footwork, sweeping the ball into the far side of the goal.

Just six minutes later, a left-footed strike by Gibson eluded keeper Floor Ursem. Holly Whelan picked up her second point and first assist of the season, playing the ball in from the touchline.

The WolfPack did well to keep UBC off the board in the second half, but the damage had already been done.

Dakota Beckett earned her first win and clean sheet of the season with three saves.



"I'm really happy with the performances of our back four," Symons added. "Ava Alexander was exceptional up top controlling the game and allowing us to attack."

UBC put a whopping 18 shots towards the WolfPack goal, five of the them on target.

The 'Birds are now the lone remaining undefeated team in the Pacific Division heading into Saturday's match against the UBC Okanagan Heat. Friday's clean sheet makes it ten straight games without allowing a goal against dating back to the final regular season game of 2024.

Saturday's contest in Kelowna kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
