SASKATOON – It was another strong weekend of wrestling for the University of Calgary Dinos this past weekend in two days of action at the University of Saskatchewan.
On Friday, the Dinos went head-to-head with the Huskies. The women walked away with a convincing 29-19 win, while the men's team narrowly lost, 22-17.
On the women's side, five of Calgary's six wins came via pin. Reigning U SPORTS Rookie of the Year Mackenzie Cayer had one of the most impressive bouts of the weekend, pinning her opponent in a mere 22 seconds.
In men's competition, the Dinos won four of the nine weight classes. Mark Schwichtenberg (76kg), Joseph De Maio (90kg) and Connor Bren (100kg) all won by pin while Brantley Saar earned a win by tech fall.
On Saturday, the Dinos picked up five more wins to go with a pair of runner-up finishes.
Saar topped his 82kg weight class to lead the way for the men's team.
Megan Walters (59kg), Sophia Povagenuc (62kg), Cayer (65kg) and Angelina Ellis-Toddington (68kg) all dominated to pick up four more wins for the Scarlet & Gold.
The Dinos are right back in action this weekend, traveling south to Lethbridge for two days more days of wrestling to wrap up the first semester.
