The reigning Voyageurs Male Athlete of the Year will not be back this season after committing to the Kansas Jayhawks in one of the biggest transfers in U SPORTS history. After transferring to Laurentian from Dalhousie to begin his Master's program, Nginyu Ngala helped spark a 7-win improvement for the men's basketball program and guide the team to their first playoff victory since 2020.

Ngala's strong season was recognized by the league as he was named an OUA Third Team All-Star.  And for coach Brandon Edwards, while disappointed to not have Ngala for his final season, the opportunity for his point guard is fantastic.

"Nginyu is getting an opportunity to continue his university career in the US," Edwards commented.  "We spoke at the end of the season about where he was at, mentally and physically, and what goals he had for himself.  When he came to Laurentian the challenge he faced and something we spoke about often was, 'Can you lead a team as the #1 option'?  So, all of last season we helped him grow and adjust to a new conference, opponents, and role as a veteran leader with a lot of attention geared towards him.  I believe that elevated his game."

"I knew he wanted to play professionally or explore other opportunities.  He already has a degree in hand.  He has played 4 years of U SPORTS.  He has accomplished some great things. His time at Laurentian is over but he is ready for his next challenge.  I am happy for Gee and his family," Edwards concluded.

Ngala will be joining a Jayhawks squad that has been a perennial contender in the NCAA man's basketball landscape under storied coach, Bill Self.
