WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier football alum Taylor Elgersma has been selected by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2026 United Football League (UFL) Quarterback Draft on Monday as part of the first phase in its player selection process for the upcoming season.

The UFL is a professional spring football league in the United States, launched in 2024 following the merger of the XFL and USFL, that provides players an opportunity to develop and earn opportunities with NFL teams.

"I feel very blessed to be selected to the UFL," said Elgersma. "I'm also excited about the next opportunities ahead in my career."

The news comes following work outs with the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins after being released by the Green Bay Packers following training camp in August.

Elgersma completed 16 of 23 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions over three preseason games with the Packers, finishing with a 104.6 quarterback rating.

Prior to that, he became just the fourth Canadian university quarterback to sign with an NFL team, and the first since 1987.

The 23 year-old from London, Ont. was also the first U SPORTS quarterback to be invited to the Reese's Senior Bowl and was also drafted 18th overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2025 CFL Draft.

The two-time OUA MVP, 2024 Hec Crighton winner, and 2025 Lois and Doug Mitchell U SPORTS Athlete of the Year from London, Ont. led Laurier to its ninth Yates Cup championship, and its first Uteck Bowl win and Vanier Cup appearance since 2005 two seasons ago.

That year, Elgersma led both the OUA and U SPORTS in touchdowns (20), yards per game (330.4), pass efficiency (187.5), and total passing yards (2,643), breaking the program record he set the previous year.
