2026 is upon us and for the young UNBC Timberwolves, a prime opportunity lies ahead for them. Each remaining game provides an opportunity to learn, grow and succeed and despite their 1-11 record – there have been encouraging signs that Sergey Shchepotkin's crew can hold their heads high about.
Beginning tomorrow night at 6 pm, the TWolves host the UBC Thunderbirds (8-4) on EmpowHER Night and then Satuday they'll host the UFV Cascades at 5 pm for "Shoot For the Cure" Night.
The Thunderbirds arrive at UNBC riding a three-game winning streak. Their two previous wins came against the divison-leading Trinity Western Spartans, and thanks to that sweep, they now sit two wins shy of matching Trinity at the top of the standings.
Offensively UBC is led by fifth-year guard Olivia Weekes who thrives in traffic and can score from all over. The Winnipeg product is averaging 15.9 points-per-game which ranks her sixth in the conference. Weekes also moonlights as the team's top rebounder (8.7).
The UFV Cascades started slowly but have found their rhythm as of late. After dropping a home decision to UNBC on November 21, the Cascades have responded by winning four of their past five. Their 6-7 record has vaulted them back into the Top 4 of the Pacific Division standings and firmly back into the playoff picture.
Fifth-year forward Julia Tuchscherer is averaging 17.3 points-per-game which places her fourth in conference scoring, and defensively she's also the catalyst averaging 8.7 rebounds.
For UNBC they'll once again lean heavily on third-year guard Viktoriia Filatova to facilitate the offense. Her 15.8 points-per-game are tops on the team and she's followed next by rookie forward Hazel Phillips who has impressed with an average of 7.8. Fellow rookie Aurora Cabrera is averaging 8.7 rebounds-per-game, matching her with both Weekes and Tuchscherer.
If you can't make it to the NSC this week for either game, you can catch all of the action live on Canada West TV.
The Lions look to extend their momentum as they head east for a crucial road swing following a dominant performance that showcased their depth and defensive intensity on the court.
