Brock
10-2
In their first game of the new calendar year, the Laurentian Men's Basketball team came up just short on the road, falling 71-64 to the Brock Badgers. Facing a Brock squad that entered the contest with a 9-2 record, the Voyageurs battled through four competitive quarters but ultimately failed to resist the home team's offensive showdown, dropping to 7-6 on the season.
The opening frame saw Laurentian struggle to find its rhythm offensively, while Brock built an early lead through strong perimeter shooting. Despite a strong performance from Ismael Konate in the paint, the Vees trailed 20-13 leading into the second.
The second quarter saw Laurentian finding its footing. Brice Fandio sparked the offence in transition, while Konate controlled the glass on both ends. The Voyageurs trimmed the deficit halfway through the quarter, with scoring from Keenan Morain and Evan Boudreau-Munro, but Brock responded quickly to carry a 36-29 lead into halftime.
A pivotal third quarter ensued, with Brock opening the half with a quick run, pulling the game apart and controlling a double-digit lead. Fandio answered with back-to-back drives to the rim, and Konate added second-chance points to keep Laurentian in competitive reach. Still, turnovers and missed opportunities halted the Vees from fully closing the gap, as they trailed 53-42 with one to go.
Laurentian made one final push in the fourth. Boudreau-Munro and Morain knocked down timely shots, while Konate continued to battle in the paint. Brock's lead was cut to seven with just three minutes to play. Despite a late-stage surge, the Badgers closed the game at the free-throw line to seal the victory.
Konate once again anchored the Voyageurs on the boards with 12, and Fandio led the offensive efforts with 17 points and six assists. The game showed more than a loss. It showed Laurentian's resilience against one of the OUA's top teams heading deeper into January.
Justin Sunga and the Timberwolves face a pivotal stretch at the Northern Sport Centre as they battle for a post-season berth against two of the Pacific Division's most formidable programs.
