Weekend Story

A pair of rivalry matches are on tap for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team that is back in regular season action for the first time in 2026 this weekend when they host the UBC Okanagan Heat.

Taking on the Heat at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, the games hold significance importance for the 'Pack.

Finishing the first half of the season with five conference wins for the first time since 2019-20, the WolfPack currently occupy the fifth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division and are just one game back of UBCO for fourth place.

Also, at stake this coming weekend is the Presidents' Cup. An annual competition between the two schools in their head-to-head games in basketball, volleyball and soccer the Presidents' Cup has been awarded from 1993-2003 and was re-established in 2013. These upcoming games will be the final ones of the year between the two schools and will decide who takes home the cup with the 2025-26 series tied at 2-2-1.

TRU (5-7) ended the first semester with a commanding 74-50 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves back on December 5. Third-year guard Sydney Vollrath was named the CW women's basketball player of the week after a nearly perfect 7-9 shooting performance from beyond-the-arc saw her score a career-high 28 points.

UBCO (6-6) also earned an impressive result in their final weekend of play before the winter break as they earned a split with the UBC Thunderbirds in Kelowna.

These teams played each other in the first game of the season back on October 24 with the Heat earning a slim 52-48 win. Morgan Eichenberger led the way offensively for TRU with 16 points in the game.

3 Things

1: Fryer's Express will be serving up hot food inside the TCC all year long.

2: The WolfPack will be trying to claim the women's version of the Presidents' Cup for the first time since 2019-20.

3: TRU is 12-6 all-time at home against UBCO in Canada West play.

By The Numbers

10.4: TRU's Morgan Eichenberger leads the conference with 10.4 rebounds per game. So far this season Eichenberger has pulled down 19 rebounds (vs. MacEwan on Nov. 8) and 18 rebounds (vs. UFV Nov. 29), marks that rank tied for first and tied for second in program history.

13: Kanani Coon is the focal point of the Heat offence with 13 points-per-game. Lily Pink (9.6) and Tsuki Tsuzuki (9) round out the top scorers for UBCO.

3.7: WolfPack point guard Olena Vasylenko is sixth in the conference with 3.7 assists-per-game.
