MONTREAL —  Alex Surprenant, head coach of the McGill University football program, recently announced his team captains for the 2025 football season, extending a tradition of leadership that began in the program's first year of play in 1872.

The group is headlined by veteran Domenico Piazza of Mercier, Que., a 6-foot-2, 294-pound offensive lineman who previously earned a bachelor's degree in industrial relations and is now pursuing a graduate certificate in public relations and communications management. Piazza, a fifth-round draft pick of the CFL's Edmonton Elks last spring, has returned for his fifth year of eligibility, providing experience and stability up front.

At quarterback, Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald of Montreal will serve as captain for a second straight season. The 6-foot-4, 196-pounder is a physical and health education senior, who currently owns the all-time school touchdown record with 26 majors in 27 career games.

Joining them is receiver Felix Joly of Île-Perrot, Que., a 5-foot-11, 179-pound sophomore, also in physical and health education. Joly's steady development has made him a reliable target in the passing game.

On defence, linebacker Ilan Barbaras, a native of Nice, France, is a 6-foot-1, 221-pound kinesiology senior in the faculty of Education.

He is joined by fellow linebacker Philippe Bouthot of Quebec City, a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder in his second year of finance studies at the Desautels Faculty of Management, who broke through with a standout rookie campaign.

In the secondary, Ryan McNally of Laval, Que. adds veteran presence. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound defensive back has a history of clutch defensive plays. In his fifth year of eligibility, he is enrolled in graduate studies after completing an Arts degree in economics.

Together, this six-member group blends veteran experience, international representation and promising youth. They are tasked with guiding a roster that continues to balance athletic excellence with academic achievement, carrying forward a legacy of McGill football leadership more than 150 years in the making.
