Wolfville, NS – The STFX X-Men ruined the Acadia Axemen's home opener by keeping them off the scoresheet Saturday afternoon with a decisive 35-0 victory at Raymond Field.
The X-Men opened up a 9-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to a safety and a 12-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Silas Fagnan.
The White and Blue extended their lead to 30-0 at half time with a trio of majors in the second quarter. Fagnan connected with running backs Malcolm Bussey and Caleb Fogarty who scored from four and 20 yards out, respectively.
The first half scoring was rounded out with an 11-yard TD reception from Zach Houde with only 30 seconds to go. Houde would finish the game with 9 catches for 139 yards and earn STFX player of the game honours
STFX had 362 total yards on offense in the opening half to Acadia's 74.
The only scoring in the second half was a STFX safety early in the third quarter and a 40-yard field goal from Payton Plesh midway through the fourth. Plesh had six points in the game, also booting three extra points as he saw time on special teams and as a receiver.
Fagnan finished the game with 320 passing yards, going 25 for 38.
Bussey had 14 carries for 65 yards, while Fogarty had 8 carries for 42.
On the defensive side of the ball, Owen Watrych had 7 tackles for the X-Men and Otito Nwaogu had 6.5 including a sack.
The X-Men will play their home opener next Saturday, September 6th against Mount Allison. Kickoff is 2:00 pm at STFX Stadium. Tickets can be purchased at www.goxgo.ca/tickets.
